CHAPTER 4

Stacy expected the subsequent conversation to be utterly awkward, but it was not as bad as she had expected. Lying in Alex’s arms, against the roots of the old tree, she realised that she was still just Alex. Her friend, her loyal companion and partner in crime. But something needed to be said, if only to make her understand once and for all, that Stacy loved her.

The only reason Stacy hadn’t told her before was because she knew for sure that it would scare her off or ruin what they had. Now though, Alex had proven that she wanted Stacy, physically as well as emotionally and she had the guts to finally just tell her.

Alex’s thumb caressed her cheek as the rain started to subside.

‘I suppose we have to get back to the so-called game,’ Alex said suddenly, but her tone of voice was far too lazy to back up her words.

Instead of getting up Stacy snuggled closer. ‘I can’t believe this just happened.’

Alex gave her an amused look and smiled. ‘Why not? It’s no biggy, you’re single, I’m single—’

‘And we’re also best friends.’ Stacy acted coy. ‘Which is a big no no in the world of dating.’

‘Who cares what society’s norms are?’ Alex said with slight annoyance in her voice. ‘I make my own rules.’

‘Me too,’ Stacy said, quick to agree. ‘Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted you? Wanted you like this? I’ve had feelings for you for ages now, but I just… I never…’ she hesitated.

Alex pushed herself into a sitting position. ‘Well, you should have. I’m not a mind reader. Why didn’t you tell me? Before, I mean?’

Stacy shrugged. ‘It doesn’t matter anymore. What’s important is that you know now.’

Stacy put her hand on Alex’s shoulder and she felt her tense.

‘Yes,’ Alex replied, ‘but things are… complicated.’

Apprehension filled Stacy when she sensed Alex fighting something inside that she knew spelt bad news. Dare she enquire and risk hearing that Alex was seeing someone else, or that she didn’t want to spoil the friendship? All these ponderings were ugly potholes in her path to happiness.

Without thinking, Stacy suddenly blurted, ‘What complications?’

Alex sighed. It was a long, arduous exhale that troubled Stacy so much that she almost withdrew her question. Inside, she felt as if she had destroyed a perfect friendship. Alex turned to look at her. ‘I’m leaving.’

Stacy’s heart stopped. Alex said nothing after that, which forced her to pry against her own better judgement. Stacy was so desperate to hold on to Alex, now that she knew that she felt the same, that she risked her heart for it. ‘Where are you going?’

‘I’m leaving in three days, Stace. I’m traveling the world, writing about different cultures and staying in different countries,’ Alex explained.

At least it’s not another woman, her inner voice tried to console, before reality struck. If, rather when, Alex left she was bound to find someone on her travels. You spoke out too late, you idiot. Now someone in a foreign country is going to claim her.
